My Body, My Temple (Book, 2023)
In her first book, artist Leslie Keffer uses Artificial Intelligence to generate images of the body to contemplate the process of healing from trauma. My Body, My Temple is a provocative and mind-bending journey through stunning images that summon a visceral experience and reflect the internal feelings of a trauma survivor.
These works were conjured through the debilitating effects of traumatic experiences and the transcendence that comes with healing. Over a period of several months, Keffer worked intuitively to find the specific settings and keywords that would prompt an Artificial Intelligence program to produce images that represent the various stages of her recovery from PTSD. In an almost stream-of-consciousness fashion, she fine-tuned every detail to translate the abstract existence of a damaged organism in its natural habitat.
My Body, My Temple not only seeks to communicate pain and growth, but also to illustrate the depths of experience that come with trauma across generations, and more locally, across an entire body's cellular memory. In essence, My Body, My Temple effectively transmits the daunting nature of everyday occurrences in the life of a trauma survivor who is marred by previous events, as well as the various degrees of reconnection one can experience through the course of healing.
